Long Travel Adventures: What to Pack for an Extended Trip!
Hey there, fellow dog lovers! Planning a long road trip with your furry best friend? Awesome! This article is all about packing essentials for those extended adventures, like 3+ day trips or more. While we love our weekend getaways, longer trips require a bit more preparation. We usually pack the same general gear, but there are a few extra things we bring along for those longer hauls. Let’s dive in! Remember, this isn’t sponsored content, just the stuff we’ve found super helpful.
We usually skip the tent life on these longer trips and opt for the comfort of dog-friendly Airbnbs (check out our ‘favorite stays’ page for linked Airbnbs).
Essential Comfort and Security:
Travel Crate: This is their safe haven on wheels! We love collapsible crates like this one from Chewy because they're easy to store and set up.
Bedding: Think cozy blankets or a familiar bed to make their crate feel like home. We also love plush throw blankets for added snuggles.
Food and Hydration:
Dog Food: Pack enough of their regular food for the entire trip, with a few extra days' worth just in case. Food storage containers can help keep things fresh.
Food and Water Bowls: Lightweight, collapsible bowls are the way to go. We use these from Target - super easy to clean and bring along - but most pet stores, Chewy included, always have these in stock.
Essential Supplies:
Leash and Collar: Make sure their collar has updated ID tags and pack a sturdy leash for exploring all the new sniff spots. Tactipup is our go-to for all things dogs. Milo’s collar and leash have lasted the past 2 years in incredible shape despite all of the adventures we’ve been on. They are super sturdy and dependable, not to mention built to last. We also LOVE that the collar comes with a handle, it tends to come in handy when needing to grab Milo when he is off-leash.
Waste Bags: Be a responsible pet parent and pack plenty of waste bags!
First-Aid Kit: A must-have for any adventure, big or small. If you haven’t had a run in with any bees, splinters, or allergies consider yourself lucky! However, you never know when there might be an emergency, so best be prepared.
Medications: If your pup needs any meds, pack enough for the trip and any prescriptions. We always pack Benadryl just for emergencies and keep it in our first aid kit.
Entertainment and Enrichment:
Dog Backpack: Let your pup feel like a big explorer with their own backpack! It's perfect for carrying water, treats, or even their favorite toy. I know when Milo goes on his 'boys only backpacking trip,' his dad happily lets him pull his weight and carry his own stuff.
Calming Aids: If your dog gets anxious on the road, consider calming chews or other supplements. Milo is scared of thunderstorms, loud noises, and can sometimes get overstimulated around large crowds.
Toys and Chews: Pack their favorite toys and chews to keep them entertained during long car rides. And if you’re staying in an Airbnb, it’s always a good idea to bring your own toys to avoid any accidents with things that aren’t yours.
Remember: Your pup's comfort and safety are priority number one! With a little planning and packing, you're guaranteed an unforgettable adventure together.
